The 5 Key Essentials to Health

growth-arrowThe path to health is not a linear process. Meaning you do not always get better one step at a time. It is more like waves and spirals, things change and move. It is not sequential, nor is it straight, direct, undeviating, or any other part of google’s definition of “linear”. There are many ups and downs but here is what we do know, everything you are experiencing in your journey is moving you one step closer.

A teacher once said to me, “all the painful edges and challenges you are facing in your healing process are like beautiful gifts wrapped in s$%!, and you know what? She was totally right!

Let me ask you if this story sounds familiar…

You spend hours upon hours researching online to find a health practitioner to help restore you back to health. You spend valuable time interviewing multiple people, all of which have a completely different point of view but all of which make some degree of sense in their own right. You’re very confused, you are very scared but you are very excited because you think you have found the right match for you. You don’t have a lot of time, you don’t have a lot of energy and you don’t have a lot of money to invest, but you take the plunge. You do everything they say, you do all the labs, take all the supplements, eat all the crazy foods they recommend, but still in the end you feel exactly the same if not worse. You are lost, discouraged and feel that you are going to sick for the rest of your life. You ask yourself “Why me? Why does is this happening to me?”

We hear this story over and over everyday from people we talk to all over the globe. They have eaten all the right foods, taken all the right hormones and supplements, but NO-thing has worked. Perplexed you are, but perplexed we are not. Let us explain…..

The 5 Key Essentials to HealthHave you ever heard the story of the Chinese Bamboo Tree? If you have not, you are in for a treat.

Most people love bamboo. They love how they look, their strength, their meaning (I personally love my bamboo sheets!) but very few people understand the process of how bamboo grows. The Chinese Bamboo Tree teaches us success lessons on patience, faith, perseverence, growth and development and most surprising of all…human potential!

Like any plant, growth of the Chinese Bamboo Tree requires nurturing – water, fertile soil, sunshine. In its first year, we see no visible signs of activity. In the second year, again, nothing – no growth above the soil. The third and fourth year, guess what? Still nothing. Our patience is tested and we begin to wonder if our efforts (caring, water, etc) will ever be rewarded.

When finally, in the fifth year – behold, a miracle! There is growth and what growth it is! The Chinese Bamboo Tree grows  80 feet in just 6 weeks!

The entire time you are watering what you don’t see is what is happening below the surface. Beneath the surface, a massive, dense and strong foundation of roots is spreading all throughout the ground to prepare for the rapid growth the bamboo will experience.

Here is the point…

We have all been mislead into believing this insane idea that after suffering with health issues for multiple years, in some cases, decades, we should feel better in 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, etc.

When in all reality, here is the general guideline. For every year you have not been feeling well, it takes about one month of rebuilding and repair. This means if you have not been feeling well for the last 10years then it would take approximately ten months for the body to regulate itself back to optimal function! AND about another 4 years to completely repair from its exposure to toxins and stresses.

Fortunately, there is never a moment in your life your body is not working to express health. In fact, every moment of everyday your body is doing its very best to establish balance, homeostasis and will do whatever it has to in order to accomplish this goal (stealing from Peter to pay Paul). It is your responsibility to seek out what your body needs (resources) to allow healing to unfold.

No matter how old you are or what you are suffering with, you can help the body repair and recover from the stresses you have encountered over the years.

If you are taking steps to achieve health, things in your body are changing. They may not be changing at the rate you want or need them to change, but you can rest assured, they are changing – just like the Chinese Bamboo Tree.

“Like the roots of a bamboo tree, it is a long and arduous process of invisible growth, where you are building the foundation that is necessary to sustain success.”

– Joshua Medcalf

For many days, weeks, months, and years you may feel nothing is happening, but you must embrace and trust the process and let go of the outcome.

And this my friends is how we get to The 5 Essential Keys to Health. These 5 essentials are the watering that must take place day in and day out in order for healing to take place. They form the roots in order to support you, guide you and nourish you throughout your journey. They are your story.

I have only been unwell for less than a year, and have been working on getting better for the past 10 months. This includes eating healthy, taking supplements, and checking my labs. I am still unwell, so if you can explain to me why this is still my situation, I would love to hear it. I have seen multiple doctors, both functional and conventional, but I still feel like no progress is being made.

Hey Dante…thank you for your comment. I think what you are saying is very important and I also think it’s a frustration many people share, hence the recent blog and video. To begin chances are you did not become “unwell” a year ago. The body goes through many different phases prior to even expressing symptoms, in fact if we look at the 5 stages of disease you will find symptoms falls in at #4. More often then not the body has been in compensation for many many years prior to this. For many there is typically a stressful event or an accumulation of life stresses that eventually catch up and they meet their stress potential or threshold. I know, speaking for myself, it was not until my early 30’s that I realized something was way off. Looking back I can now see my entire biochemistry had been compromised from very early on in life. Our current state of health is a reflection of everything we have been exposed to physically, psychologically, nutritionally, emotionally and mentally from conception to this present moment. Here is what I can assure, you have every bit of ability to restore your health but you may just find you need to understand yourself more to help identify what pieces are essential to your healing puzzle. As we mentioned in the blog, if the foundation is not sound enough, no amount of supplements or labs are going to help. Making healthier choices around food is a start but one thing we are noticing more and more is that even our nutrition is getting more specific because we are so overloaded with internal and external stresses. If we are unaware of how these things are affecting us on a personal level, we can get very lost in trying to heal. Hope this helps.

  4. LIke it Josh!

The fact that illness and therefore wellness is a process that can be managed and avoided is a concept that I really agree with.

    Good video!
